COLUMBUS -- For Tallmadge's two sophomore state qualifiers, day one of the Division II state wrestling tournament March 9 at Value City Arena in Columbus was a mixed bag.

Experience factor was a big factor on day one for the Blue Devils.

Making his second trip to the state competition, sophomore 106-pounder Ed "Rock" Suber was on his game in the first round, scoring a 12-2 win over Oberlin Firelands' Payton Burgdorf.

Suber was set to face Lisbon Beaver's Cole McComas in the quarterfinals March 9, but results were not available at press time.

"Ed Suber went out there and controlled the match from the start," Blue Devils head coach Jason Shaw said. "He looks like he has been here."

In his first state appearance, Tallmadge 132-pounder Jake Potok lost his first match 6-3 to Urichsville Claymont All-Ohioan Chandler Golec.

"Jake was little bit nervous," Shaw said. "There's nothing that can prepare you for this level. He wrestled a state placer and didn't back down."

In the consolation round, Potok wrestled Wapakoneta's Jayden Hefner and was eliminated with a 7-3 loss. Potok finished the season at 37-16.
