Tallmadge -- A brief ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place Feb. 1 at 9 a.m. to mark the new urgent care services being offered at an existing Akron General location at 33 North Ave.

After the ceremony, Akron General will host an open house. Those who stop in between 9 a.m. and noon are eligible for a free blood pressure screening, stay well first-aid kit, hot chocolate and a chance to win a TV.

Akron General is providing these new services in hopes of reaching out to surrounding areas to provide quality care and flexible hours of service.

"Our new center will serve families [adults and children] who need care for minor, yet urgent complaints and offer a higher level of care than a standard retail health clinic, such as X-ray and suturing," Anurag W. Kedia, medical director of Akron General Urgent Care, said. "This is especially convenient for minor health complaints when physician offices are closed after work and on the weekends."

Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. To 5 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. Appointments are not needed, walk-ins are accepted.

"The scope of practice for the Akron General Urgent Care Center was carefully and specifically designed to offer the community a place to go with minor, yet urgent needs," Kedia said.

The facility will not offer care for emergency medical situations that should instead be directed to an emergency department.

Urgent Care services include minor illness care, immunizations, minor injuries, X-Rays, limited lab testing, occupational health, sports and school physicals for children, among other ministrations.

There are plans for up to four more urgent care centers throughout the surrounding areas within the next year, Jim Armstrong, Akron General director of public relations and communications, said.

"Again, this is an effort to meet the healthcare needs of people where they live with facilities offering services convenient to them," Armstrong said.

Akron general is hiring several nurse practitioners to help staff the new center.
