Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to host conference
The Akron, Ohio Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will host its semi-annual conference April 19 at 7 p.m. and 20 at 10 a.m. at the Latter-day Saint chapel located at 106 E. Howe Road in Tallmadge.
Visiting church authority Elder Michael John U. Teh of the Church's First Quorum of the Seventy will be a special guest at the conference sessions. All members and the general public ages 12 years and older are invited to the Saturday evening session, while the Sunday session is open for all ages.
"We are thrilled to have Elder Teh at the conference sessions in Northeast Ohio. We are looking forward to his message and to commemorating this season of Easter as we celebrate the life and the resurrection of the Savior Jesus Christ," said Douglas Talley, president of the Akron Ohio Stake. "We extend an invitation to all to join with us for these meetings," added Talley.
Teh was called to serve as a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints March 31, 2007, at age 41. The LDS Church organizes its congregations geographically into "wards" and several wards then combine to make a "stake." Because there are more than 15 million members of the Church worldwide, "Area" assignments are given to selected church leaders who oversee church activity in those areas. Teh is currently serving as president of the Philippines Area of the Church. He was born in Davao City, Davao Del Sur, Philippines in June 1965. He married Grace May Weedon in December 1989. They are the parents of three children and reside in Manila, Philippines.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has a membership of nearly 12,500 members in Northeast Ohio. The Akron Ohio Stake consists of 10 wards with membership from New Philadelphia, Canton, Ashland, Wooster, Medina and Akron. Stake conferences are scheduled twice each year with church leaders speaking on a variety of topics from the gospel of Jesus Christ. For more information about the Church, visit www.mormon.org

During the Lenten season, First Congregational Church has two options for adults to deepen their faithful journey. On Wednesdays, through April 9 from 6:30 to 8 p.m., there will be a book discussion led by the Rev. Dr. John Schluep. The focus of the study will be the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, supplemented with the book by John Ortberg, "Who Is This Man: The Unpredictable Impact of the Inescapable Jesus." The cost is $12 per book.
The second opportunity is "Rest in God: A Lenten Invitation" on Thursdays through April 10 from 6 to 6:30 p.m. A guided contemplation led by the Rev. Matt Wooster will teach and lead the ancient spiritual practices of Contemplative Meditation and Lectio Divina, a Latin phrase meaning "holy reading" of scripture. This opportunity for spiritual practice is designed to open space in people's lives to listen when God is speaking to them and within them. The 40 days of Lent are modeled on the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness, and the 40 years spent by the Hebrews in the wilderness after the Exodus from Egypt.
First Congregational Church of Tallmadge is located at 85 Heritage Drive. For more information, call 330-633 4931 or visit firstname.lastname@example.org or the church Facebook page at First Congregational Church of Tallmadge, UCC to view current activities.
