"The Art of Living: A Conversation on Healthy Transitions" program, will be hosted by the Elder's Fellowship of the First Congregational Church of Tallmadge, UCC on Sept. 24, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the church. The program will feature Emily Dorland, ADC/MC, CDP, program service coordinator for Arden Courts. Dorland specializes in a family's healthy transition through the changes that occur through time. Following Dorland's presentation a panel discussion will be held featuring members of the Elder's Fellowship and several family members (adult children.) Resource tables will provide information on services available through private and public venues. Refreshments will be provided.

The Elder's Fellowship started several years ago as a special ministry serving the needs of the congregation and wider community. Dr. John Schluep, senior pastor explained, "Our society is pretty much segregated by age. We group young children together at school, and in athletics, the segregation continues across the life span. We divide along the era of birth: The Greatest Generation. Baby Boomers. Generation X. Millennials, etc. We treat aging as a problem to be solved rather than a time of celebration and appreciation." He continued, "Elder's Fellowship started as a focus ministry that we need the elder's blessing and wisdom. Our aging church members continue to grow spiritually and their needs change. Our effort with a program like The Art of Living provides the opportunity to begin a conversation between family members expressing their needs, raising awareness, and 'normalizing' the aging process. Emily Dorland made a statement, 'Life at this period isn't about role reversal where children become the parent of their parents; rather it is a responsibility reversal. Needs have changed and this is an opportunity to grow as a family.' We are here to serve the family through life."

Warriors' Journey Home Ministry -- Listen, Speak, Heal is scheduled Aug. 14 and 28 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Veterans and individuals of strong heart who would like to experience the healing circle for veterans are invited to attend. For future meeting times, visit the website warriorsjourneyhome.org.
