The AARP Driver Safety Program will be offered at the Tallmadge Community Center, 80 Community Road, Feb. 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members.
The AARP Driver Safety Program is the nation's first and largest classroom driver improvement course for motorists ages 50 and older. No actual driving is required in taking the course and it may qualify participants for a lower rate of auto insurance. No tests are handed in and there is no actual driving. Trained volunteers conduct the sessions.
The program is unique in that it concentrates on older drivers and the issues that affect them, rather than the new driver. The course helps people prepare for the normal age-related physical changes and to be aware of behavior that can cause crashes. The program provides practical techniques to compensate for normal changes in vision, hearing and reaction time that come with age as well as training in defensive driving. AARP members are charged $12 and non-members are charged $14 to help offset program costs.
Participants are asked to take their valid driver's license with them to class. Checks may be made payable to AARP.
