Orienteering club starts 2013 season April 13

The North Eastern Ohio Orienteering Club will be offering an Orienteering for Beginners program April 13 and a club meet open to the public on April 14. Both programs -- the first two events of the 2013 season -- are at the Kendall Lakes Shelter in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

The Orienteering for Beginners program is designed to teach the skills needed to find one's way across terrain using a topographic map and compass. There will be instruction, followed by a map walk accompanied by an expert. Class members with then practice new skills by completing a short orienteering course back to the shelter.

Registration starts at 11:30 a.m. The cost to attend the program is $10, which includes a detailed booklet on orienteering skills. The Orienteering for Beginners program takes about three hours.

The April 14 meet will be a cross country orienteering event, with five courses of varying skill levels -- including a beginner's course.

More information about orienteering, the North Eastern Ohio Orienteering Club and the complete 2013 schedule of events can be found at www.neooc.com.
