Fourth annual Circle City Cycle Social
Enjoy a family bike ride along the newly finished Freedom Trail at this non-competitive biking event from the Tallmadge Recreation Department Sept. 8 from 2 to 4:30 p.m. The event begins on the bike trail at Lions Park and then follows along the Freedom Trail. Along the trail there will be games, bike decorating stations, prizes and surprises. Following the ride, participants will have the chance to enjoy ice cream and entertainment. Helmets are required of all participants. Cost is $5 per resident rider and $7 per non-resident rider and includes a T-shirt and ice cream. Register by Aug. 30 to be guaranteed a T-shirt, or register the day of the event.
Youth volleyball leagues
Boys and girls in grades 2 through 6 can learn volleyball skills at this instructional volleyball Thursdays, Sept. 12 through Oct. 17. Grades 2 and 3 will play from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and grades 4 through 6 will play from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. Jump Start Sports coaching staff will teach participants the fundamentals of volleyball such as serves, sets, slams, blocks, returns, positioning and strategy. This program is designed to be fun and educational for both novices and experienced players. Cost is $60 for residents and $70 for non-residents and includes a team T-shirt. Children ages 7 through 11 are invited to attend this instructional soccer league Sundays, Sept. 15 through Oct. 20 from 3 to 4 p.m. Each class includes 30 minutes of instruction in all aspects of the game and 30 minutes of games. Each game will include an equal measure of healthy competition and instruction within the context of the game. All coaching will be done by Jump Start Sports coaching staff. Parents may assist in coaching. Indoor turf shoes, regular tennis shoes, gym or athletic shoes must be worn. No cleats of any type will be permitted. Cost is $60 for residents and $70 for non-residents and includes a team T-shirt and soccer medal. Register online or at the TRC by Sept. 9.
Hummingbird Soccer league
Youth Hummingbird Soccer League for ages 3 through 6 will be offered Sundays, Sept. 15 through Oct. 20. Children ages 3 and 4 will have class from 1 to 2 p.m. and children ages 5 and 6 will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Each class includes instruction in the basics of soccer, such as dribbling, passing, trapping, shooting and positioning and low-key, non-competitive games. The Tallmadge Recreation Department invites boys and girls ages 8 through 12 to take their Nerf gun of choice and some extra ammo to this event scheduled for Sept. 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. The evening will include target practice and a team capture-the-flag challenge. Cost, which includes snacks and extra bullets, is $5 for residents and $7 for non-residents. Register in person or online by Sept. 11.
Coffee Talk -- The Therapeutic Value
Seniors are invited to attend a free Coffee Talk about the therapeutic value of humor presented by Harbor Light Hospice at 10 a.m. Sept. 12. Light refreshments will be provided. Admission is free, but space is limited. Make reservations at the TRC by noon Sept. 11.
Girl Scout SWAPS Night
Girl Scouts are invited to create and exchange SWAPS Sept. 11 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. In the 1950s and 1960s, Girl Scouts and Girl Guides gathered together and exchanged keepsakes, now known as SWAPS. Some say SWAPS stands for Special Whatchamacallits Affectionately Pinned Somewhere. All local troops are invited to join in to create these special keepsakes. Cost is $5 per resident Scout and $7 per non-resident Scout. The last day to register is Sept. 4.
Floral Design class
Learn to create seasonal flower arrangements Sept. 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. Participants will learn how to make a seasonal arrangement using fresh flowers that they may take home and display. Cost is $6 for residents and $8 for non-residents plus a $15 supply fee paid in cash to the instructor at the first class. All materials will be provided. The last day to register is Sept. 4. Pencil Drawing class
Learn the basics of pencil drawing and create "masterpieces" to take home and display by enrolling in the Pencil Drawing class. The class is designed for ages 13 and older and will be offered Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 11 through Oct. 2. Cost is $20 for residents and $25 for non-residents plus supplies. The instructor will contact participants before the class with a supply list. The last day to register is Sept. 6. The TRC will be closed for Labor Day, Sept. 2 and will reopen at 5 a.m. Sept. 3.
Labor Day 5K
registration now open
The TRC will host its annual Labor Day 5K and 1 mile Family Fun Run Sept. 2. The races will start at the TRC. The 5K begins at 9 a.m. and the fun run begins at 9:05 a.m. The path runs through the neighborhoods adjacent to the TRC and ends with a loop around the indoor track. Race fee includes computerized chip timing, T-shirt, refreshments and prizes for the top finishers in all age groups (five-year increments). Visit www.ohiochallengeseries.com to register online.
