Department Spring/Summer Brochure

Look for the Tallmadge Recreation Department Spring/Summer 2014 Brochure in the Tallmadge Express Feb. 23. The program brochure is packed with upcoming recreation programs from March through August, including new sports, events and programs for children and adults. Copies will also be available at the city building and the recreation center.

Junior Olympic



The Tallmadge Recreation Department will host Junior Olympic Youth Volleyball Tournaments Feb. 23. While the basketball courts will be unavailable during the tournament, spectators are welcome to watch some of the area's best young players compete for the tournament title free of charge.

Scrapbooking Nights

The Tallmadge Recreation Department invites all scrapbookers to "crop till they drop" at the monthly Scrapbooking Night at Ritchie Memorial Shelter House. The next Scrapbooking Night is set for Feb. 28 from 6 p.m. to midnight. The night includes open space for laying out projects, a swap table for unwanted scrapbook items and a light dinner. Cost is $10 for residents and $12 for nonresidents. Register by Feb. 27.

Trash into Treasure toy making class

Turn old, broken toys into new treasures at the Trash into Treasure toy making class Feb. 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the TRC. The class is for children ages 8 and older. Children may take their old, broken toys to swap and assemble into fun, new creations. Cost is $6 for residents and $8 for non-residents. Register at the TRC or online by Feb. 12.

Friday Night Family Fun Fest

Families are invited to enjoy same family fun at the TRC Feb. 14 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The night includes a variety of activities, including inflatable fun for parents and kids, family crafts, face painting, exhibits and a live petting zoo. Participants will also have the chance to meet several big furry celebrities, such as the University of Akron's Zippy, the Tallmadge Blue Devil and the Akron Rubber Duck's mascot. Discounted presale tickets are $4 apiece for residents and $5 apiece for non-residents. Tickets may be purchased at the TRC the day of the event for $5 per resident and $6 per non-resident. Children 2 younger are admitted free of charge.

Home school open gym

The TRC will host home school open gyms for all home school students from 12:45 to 2:30 p.m. The next session will run through March 20 at the TRC. Children in kindergarten through 12th grade will sample a variety of sports, both individual and team-based, in a supervised, safe and fun environment. No pre-registration is necessary and students may come as often as they choose. Parents may choose to pay and play or pay to workout on their own. Cost is $4 for residents and $6 for non-residents. Each class begins with a half to 1 mile timed run.
