 American Red Cross Babysitter’s Training Class

Become a certified babysitter at the American Red Cross Babysitter’s Training Class March 25 and 26, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.This class, for ages 11 through 15, will provide participants with the skills and knowledge to safely and responsibly care for infants and children. The class covers topics like leadership development, the business of babysitting, safety, how to help children behave, basic child care and basic first aid. Children must attend both days of class to become certified in babysitting. Cost is $65 for members and $70 for nonmembers. Register by March 18.

 

Spring Break Camp

The TRC is hosting a Youth Day Camp for children ages 5 through 13 over Spring Break, March 24 through 28. Camp will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day with before and after camp activities available. This supervised day camp includes organized games, crafts, field trips, movies and use of the soccer field and basketball courts. Lunch will be provided. Cost for residents is $55 per child per week or $13 per child per day. Cost for non-residents is $75 per child per week or $20 per child per day. The final day to register is March 17 for camp and before and after camp activities.

Before and after camp activities are available as early as 6:30 a.m. and as late as 6:30 p.m. Morning and afternoon snacks will be provided. Cost for both before and after camp activities is $11 per child per day for residents and $13 per child per day for nonresidents. Cost for either before care or after care is $8 per child per day for residents and $10 per child per day for nonresidents.

 

Couch Potato to Runner in Eight Weeks

Train to run a 5K with the Couch to 5K program offered on Saturday mornings, March 29 through May 24 from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. This training session will help participants go from walking in the first week to jogging 3.1 miles (5K) by the last week. The class will end with paid admission to the Memorial Day Run in Tallmadge. This class is taught by a certified personal trainer. Cost is $75 for residents and $85 for nonresidents and includes training, race fee and race T-shirt. Register in person or online by March 24.

 

Scrapbooking Nights

All scrapbookers are invited to to “crop till they drop” at TRC’s monthly Scrapbooking Nights at Ritchie Memorial Shelter House. The next one is set for March 28 from 6 to midnight. The night includes open space for laying out projects, a swap table for unwanted scrapbook items and a light dinner. Cost is $10 for residents and $12 for nonresidents. Register by March 27.

 

Youth Future Fitness Club

Children are encouraged to make 2014 a healthier year with the Future Fitness Club. The program is designed for children ages 8 through 13 and will take place Mondays and Wednesdays, March 31 through June 4 from 5 to 6 p.m. at the TRC. Children will learn about healthy fitness and eating habits while participating in games and other non-competitive activities. The program is designed to teach children that fitness can be fun and to motivate them to make healthy lifestyle choices. The class is free for TRC members (child must be member) and $5 daily drop in fee for nonmembers.

 

Stuff a Duck 

Children ages 5 through 10 can stuff their very own plush duck at the TRC April 5 at 1 p.m. Ducks come complete with a wishing star and a birth certificate. There will also be duck-themed games, stories and snacks to round out the day. Cost is $12 for residents and $15 for nonresidents. The final day to register in person or online is March 31.

 

Men’s basketball leagues

A men’s basketball league for ages 18 and older will be offered Monday nights, beginning April 7. The league includes eight games plus playoffs for the top four teams. Cost is $475 per team and includes referee fees. Registration forms plus $100 non-refundable deposit are due by March 31 to reserve a spot in the league. Payment is due in full prior to the first game.

 

Adult sewing classes

Learn to make a quilt out of old T-shirts at the TRC’s adult sewing class at the Tallmadge Community Center. The class will run Mondays, April 7 through 28 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Cost is $25 for residents and $30 for non-residents, plus the cost of supplies. Sewing machines will be provided. Class is limited to eight participants. Register at the TRC or online by March 31.

 

Crafty Club for Preschoolers

Preschoolers can show off their crafty side at the TRC’s Crafty Club April 5 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Participants will work with Miss Kim and Miss Monica creating fun, age-appropriate crafts to take home. Cost is $6 for residents and $8 for nonresidents. The last day to register is March 31.

 

Spring softball league registration going on now

The Tallmadge Recreation Department is offering four softball leagues this year: Sunday Coed, Monday Coed, Thursday Men’s and Friday Coed. League play will begin the week of April 27. All leagues play at Lions Park and Jaycee Howe Road Park. Most games will be doubleheaders (there may be a few single games) and play at 6:15, 7:15, 8:15 or 9:15 p.m. Season includes 12 games plus playoffs for top four teams. If there are an excessive number of rainouts, teams may be asked to play an additional day of the week for make up games. Players must be 18 years or older to play. Cost is $305 per team plus umpire fees of $10 per team per game paid in cash on the field. Registration ends April 4 or when leagues are full. A $100 non-refundable deposit is due to hold a spot. Full payment is due before first game. Make checks payable to City of Tallmadge. Space is limited to six teams per league on a first come basis when check is received.

 

Home school open gym 

The TRC will host home school open gyms for all home school students from 12:45 to 2:30 p.m. The next session will run through March 20 at the TRC. Children in kindergarten through 12th grade will sample a variety of sports, both individual and team-based, in a supervised, safe and fun environment. No pre-registration is necessary and students may come as often as they choose. Parents may choose to pay and play or pay to workout on their own. Cost is $4 for residents and $6 for non-residents. Each class begins with a half to 1 mile timed run.
