Home School Open Gym starts April 3
TRC will host home school open gyms for all home school students in kindergarten through 12th grade Thursdays from 12:45 to 2:30 p.m., April 3 through May 22. Students will learn a variety of sports skills, key health and fitness concepts and how to establish personal fitness goals. No pre-registration is necessary and students may attend as often as they choose. Parents may choose to pay and play or pay to workout on their own. Cost is $4 for residents and $6 for nonresidents. Each class begins with a half to 1 mile timed run.
The Tallmadge Recreation Department will host Junior Olympic Youth Volleyball tournaments April 13. The basketball courts will be unavailable during this tournament. TRC members are invited to watch some of the area's best young players compete for the tournament title. Admission is free for spectators.
Children are encouraged to make 2014 a healthier year with the Future Fitness Club. The program is designed for children ages 8 through 13 and will take place Mondays and Wednesdays, March 31 through June 4 from 5 to 6 p.m. at the TRC. Children will learn about healthy fitness and eating habits while participating in games and other non-competitive activities. The program is designed to teach children that fitness can be fun and to motivate them to make healthy lifestyle choices. The class is free for TRC members (child must be member) and $5 daily drop in fee for nonmembers.
Stuff a Duck
Children ages 5 through 10 can stuff their very own plush duck at the TRC April 5 at 1 p.m. Ducks come complete with a wishing star and a birth certificate. There will also be duck-themed games, stories and snacks to round out the day. Cost is $12 for residents and $15 for nonresidents. The final day to register in person or online is March 31.
Men's basketball leagues
A men's basketball league for ages 18 and older will be offered Monday nights, beginning April 7. The league includes eight games plus playoffs for the top four teams. Cost is $475 per team and includes referee fees. Registration forms plus $100 non-refundable deposit are due by March 31 to reserve a spot in the league. Payment is due in full prior to the first game.
Learn to make a quilt out of old T-shirts at the TRC's adult sewing class at the Tallmadge Community Center. The class will run Mondays, April 7 through 28 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Cost is $25 for residents and $30 for non-residents, plus the cost of supplies. Sewing machines will be provided. Class is limited to eight participants. Register at the TRC or online by March 31.
Crafty Club for
Preschoolers can show off their crafty side at the TRC's Crafty Club April 5 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Participants will work with Miss Kim and Miss Monica creating fun, age-appropriate crafts to take home. Cost is $6 for residents and $8 for nonresidents. The last day to register is March 31.
Spring softball league registration going on now
The Tallmadge Recreation Department is offering four softball leagues this year: Sunday Coed, Monday Coed, Thursday Men's and Friday Coed. League play will begin the week of April 27. All leagues play at Lions Park and Jaycee Howe Road Park. Most games will be doubleheaders (there may be a few single games) and play at 6:15, 7:15, 8:15 or 9:15 p.m. Season includes 12 games plus playoffs for top four teams. If there are an excessive number of rainouts, teams may be asked to play an additional day of the week for make up games. Players must be 18 years or older to play. Cost is $305 per team plus umpire fees of $10 per team per game paid in cash on the field. Registration ends April 4 or when leagues are full. A $100 non-refundable deposit is due to hold a spot. Full payment is due before first game. Make checks payable to City of Tallmadge. Space is limited to six teams per league on a first come basis when check is received.
Easter Egg Hunt
Children are invited to take their Easter baskets to the TRC for the annual Easter Egg Hunt April 12 at 10:30 a.m. sharp. Children will be broken up into the following age groups to hunt for candy-filled eggs and special prizes: 2 to 4, 5 to 6, 7 to 9, and 10 to 12. A special guest will hop on by, so parents are encouraged to take their cameras.
Acrylic painting class
Would-be painters are asked to express their artistic side at TRC's acrylic painting class. This class is designed for ages 13 and older and will be offered Tuesdays, April 8 through 29 from 6 to 8 p.m. The class will teach students the basics of acrylic painting to create their own masterpieces to take home and display. Cost is $20 for residents and $25 for nonresidents plus supplies. The instructor will contact students the week before the class with a supply list. Register by April 2.
Children will learn to make a cross-body purse and a patchwork bunny at the TRD's youth sewing class which will be offered at the Community Center Saturdays, April 12 through May 3. Cost is $25 for residents and $30 for nonresidents. Sewing machines will be provided. Register by April 7.
