Junior Olympic



The Tallmadge Recreation Department will host Junior Olympic Youth Volleyball tournaments April 13. The basketball courts will be unavailable during this tournament. TRC members are invited to watch some of the area's best young players compete for the tournament title. Admission is free for spectators.

Fitness Club

Children are encouraged to make 2014 a healthier year with the Future Fitness Club. The program is designed for children ages 8 through 13 and will take place Mondays and Wednesdays, March 31 through June 4 from 5 to 6 p.m. at the TRC. Children will learn about healthy fitness and eating habits while participating in games and other non-competitive activities. The program is designed to teach children that fitness can be fun and to motivate them to make healthy lifestyle choices. The class is free for TRC members (child must be member) and $5 daily drop in fee for nonmembers.

Closed for Easter

The Tallmadge Recreation Center will be closed Easter Sunday, April 20. It will reopen at 5 a.m. April 21.

Youth Flag Football League

The TRC is hosting youth flag football league for boys and girls in kindergarten through third grade on Sundays, April 27 through June 8 (no class May 25), from noon to 1:15 p.m. outdoors in the grassy area. Players will be grouped by age, coached at their level of understanding and play fun, low competition games under adult supervision to learn the basic fundamentals of football. Players will learn how to play offense and defense and will be introduced to speed and agility training. Parent coaches can assist in the instruction and will call the plays for their teams, but having TRC coaches lead the program will ensure all teams receive the same instruction in a planned and organized practice. Jump Start Sports staff will also officiate and supervise all games to ensure equal playing time, a rotation of players in various positions, and will help teach within the context of the game. Indoor turf shoes, regular tennis shoes, gym or athletic shoes must be worn. No cleats of any type will be permitted. Cost is $65 for residents and $75 for nonresidents and includes a team T-shirt. Register by April 21.

Youth Soccer


The TRC will host youth soccer leagues for children ages 3 through 10 on Sundays, April 27 through June 8 (no class May 25) in the grassy area outside. Children ages 3 and 4 will have class from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.; ages 5 and 6 will be from 2:30 to 3 p.m.; and ages 7 through 10 will have class from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Each class includes age-appropriate instruction in the basics of soccer like dribbling, passing, trapping, shooting and positioning and low-key, non-competitive games. Classes for the 7 through 10 age group will include 30 minutes of instruction in all aspects of the game and 30 minutes of games. Each game will include an equal measure of healthy competition and instruction within the context of the game. All coaching will be done by the TRC coaching staff. Parents may assist in coaching. Indoor turf shoes, regular tennis shoes, gym or athletic shoes must be worn. No cleats of any type will be permitted. Cost is $65 for residents and $75 for nonresidents and includes a team T-shirt and soccer medal. Register by April 21.

Easter Egg Hunt

Children are invited to take their Easter baskets to the TRC for the annual Easter Egg Hunt April 12 at 10:30 a.m. sharp. Children will be broken up into the following age groups to hunt for candy-filled eggs and special prizes: 2 to 4, 5 to 6, 7 to 9, and 10 to 12. A special guest will hop on by, so parents are encouraged to take their cameras.

Youth sewing


Children will learn to make a cross-body purse and a patchwork bunny at the TRD's youth sewing class which will be offered at the Community Center Saturdays, April 12 through May 3. Cost is $25 for residents and $30 for nonresidents. Sewing machines will be provided. Register by April 7.

Home School Open Gym program

Home school open gyms for all home school students in kindergarten through grade 12 will be offered Thursdays from 12:45 to 2:30 p.m.,through May 22. Students will learn a variety of sports skills, key health and fitness concepts and how to establish personal fitness goals. No pre-registration is necessary and students may attend as often as they choose. Parents may choose to pay and play or pay to workout on their own. Cost is $4 for residents and $6 for nonresidents. Each class begins with a to 1 mile timed run. The upcoming schedule follows:

April 10 -- Kickball/Basketball

April 17 -- Ultimate Frisbee/Parachute

April 24 -- Capture Flag/Relay Race

May 1 -- Speed & Agility/Target Toss

May 8 -- Flag Football/Sharks & Minnows

May 15 -- Soccer/Tennis/Basketball

May 22 -- Kids Choice (picnic)
