Tallmadge Historical Society to host annual dinner, open house

The Historic Church on the Circle is considered to be a National Landmark building. To retain that special designation, it becomes essential to maintain as much as possible the Circle area surrounding it.

This includes the other building sharing the center -- the Historic Town Hall. Though built many decades later, it is itself a valuable asset, both as an old building and as a receptacle of many objects and records that inform the community of that two hundred and seven year history of Tallmadge.

The Tallmadge Historical Society, founded 156 years ago, is a group of people of the community, who have taken upon themselves the responsibility to keep alive the long tradition of this building and the treasures that it contains. Through numerous open houses, historical programs and maintenance and presentation of its artifacts and pictures, the Historical Society seeks community interest and participation in its programs, museum and physical facilities.

The Historical Society will host an open house for these buildings April 27 from 2 to 4 p.m.

The organization seeks membership from the families of Tallmadge. Tallmadge history begins with them, through joining as a member, attending programs and providing their talents to the many needs of its operation.

The annual dinner meeting will take place April 26 at 6 p.m. in the Old Town Hall. The fully-catered dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. A check for $20 per person will serve as one's reservation and may be sent to the Tallmadge Historical Society, P.O. Box 25, Tallmadge 44278 before April 20. All are invited. Parking will be available at Jubilee Donuts on the Circle.

The evening's guest speaker will be David Meeker, who will discuss his great-grandfather, Sidney Edgerton (1819-1900), a lawyer, county prosecutor, U.S. Congressman appointed by Lincoln in 1863 and Chief Justice of the Idaho Territory, the Montana Territory Governor and National Republican Party organizer. His gravesite has been included in the Tallmadge Historic Cemetery Tours in past years.
