The TRD will offer summer swim lessons at Maca Aquatic Center for all ages this summer. Lessons start the week of June 9. Classes are Mondays and Wednesdays, Tuesdays and Thursdays or Saturdays. Morning and evening classes are available. Early online registration for residents and Maca pass holders is going on now. Online registration will open for everyone May 19 at 1 p.m. In person registration will begin at the TRC May 27. Cost is $50 per child for Maca pass holders and $60 per child for all others.
Summer College Passes at TRC
The TRC is offering a summer deal for college students home from school for the summer. College passes will be on sale through Aug. 31 and will be valid for 117 days from purchase. Cost for a blue membership is $85 for residents and $100 for nonresidents and cost for a gold membership is $110 for residents and $125 for nonresidents. A valid college ID is required at time of purchase.
Youth Golf League Improved for 2014
TRD has made changes and improvements to its summer youth golf program which will be scheduled Fridays, June 13 through Aug. 8 at 10 a.m. The program now includes two clinics as well as six weeks of league play. The first clinic will be at Edwin Shaw Challenge Golf Course and the remainder of the program will be at SunnyHill Golf Course. Cost is $150 for residents and $160 for nonresidents. Register by June 4.
Youth tennis lessons
TRD will offer tennis lessons to children ages 5 through 13 this summer at the tennis courts next to the TRC. Lessons will be Mondays and Wednesdays, June 2 through 25. Children ages 5 through 7 will play from 9:15 to 10 a.m., ages 8 through 10 will play from 10 to 11 a.m. and ages 11 through 13 will play from 11 a.m. to noon. The program includes age-appropriate tennis instruction from instructors with the LaTuchie Tennis Center. Cost for ages 5 through 7 is $55 for residents and $65 for nonresidents. Cost for ages 8 through 13 is $70 for residents and $80 non-residents. Register by May 28.
Maca Aquatic Center passes are on sale now at the TRC at pre-season rates. Start thinking about summer fun now and save up to $15 off the regular season rates. Preseason rates are good through May 30. Contact the TRC for prices. Maca Pool opens May 31 at 11 a.m. Maca will be open daily, weather permitting, through Aug. 17. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
at Lions Park
TRD is hosting Summer Day Camp for children ages 5 through 13 at Lions Park. Camp will be offered Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The first session is scheduled June 2 through July 3 and the second session will be July 7 through Aug. 8. Children in this program will be separated by age to participate in a summer full of adult supervised, age-appropriate activities. Age groups are 5 through 6, 7 through 9 and 10 through 13. Activities include sports, crafts, hiking, swimming, games and field trips. Children can be registered for a week at a time or for the entire five-week session. Cost for each five-week session is $220 per child for residents and $260 per child for nonresidents. Weekly rates are $55 per child for residents and $65 per child for nonresidents. Before and after camp activities are also available for an additional fee.
Last day for Home School Open Gym
TRC's home school open gym will wrap up for the season on May 22 from 12:45 to 2:30 p.m. with a Kid's Choice play day. Home school open gyms are designed for all home school students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Students learn a variety of sports skills, key health and fitness concepts and how to establish personal fitness goals. No pre-registration is necessary and students may come as often as they choose. Parents may choose to pay and play or pay to workout on their own. Cost is $4 for residents and $6 for non-residents. Each class begins with a to 1 mile timed run. Home school open gyms will return in the fall.
Inaugural Food Truck Fest
Tallmadge Recreation Department and the Tallmadge Chamber of Commerce will host their inaugural Tallmadge Food Truck Festival at the TRC June 1 from noon to 6 p.m. Eight food trucks will be in attendance, including The Nosh Box (Southern, home-style comfort food), Zydeco Bistro (Creole and Cajun cuisine), The Stone Pelican Rolling Caf (wraps and quesadillas), Boca Loca Burrito Factory (burritos), Mobile Sushi Bar (made-to-order sushi and other Asian cuisine), Sweet! Mobile Cupcakes (cupcakes), East Coast Custard (Frozen Custard) and PopSmith (Popsicles). Chamber will sell pop and water to benefit local charities. The event is designed for all ages, featuring a performance by The Swizzle Stick Band and activities and games for children. Admission is free, the food is not. Overflow parking will be available at Tallmadge High School.
Adult indoor soccer leagues
TRC will host indoor soccer leagues for 30 and older coed teams on Thursday evenings this summer. The league will play in the air-conditioned TRC to prevent overheating in the summer sun. The league begins June 12 and plays an eight-game schedule. Cost is $460 per team plus referee fees ($10 per game) paid in cash on the field at each game. Registration closes June 6. A $100 non-refundable deposit is due at registration and full payment is due before the first game.
Closed Memorial Day
TRC will be closed Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, and will reopen at 5 a.m. May 27.
Children are encouraged to make 2014 a healthier year with the Future Fitness Club. The program is designed for children ages 8 through 13 and will take place Mondays and Wednesdays, through June 4 from 5 to 6 p.m. at the TRC. Children will learn about healthy fitness and eating habits while participating in games and other non-competitive activities. The program is designed to teach children that fitness can be fun and to motivate them to make healthy lifestyle choices. The class is free for TRC members (child must be member) and $5 daily drop in fee for nonmembers.

Employee Spotlight for May
TRC is shining the spotlight on a different employee each month. This month's employee spotlight is Kelly Davis. Kelly works as a supervisor and has been with the Rec for three years. In her spare time, Kelly likes to paint and do special effect makeup. She has two dogs, a Lhasa Poo named Snickers and a German Shepherd named Odin. Her favorite vacation spot is anywhere warm with a beach nearby.
