Birding programs sure to delight visitors in June

Join a naturalist for any of the following free programs:

EVENING BIRD HIKE -- June 7, 6 p.m., Springfield Bog Metro Park, 1400 Portage Line Rd., Springfield Twp. Join a naturalist on a hunt for breeding birds at this unique park. Bring binoculars and a field guide.

SUMMER BIRDS -- June 11, 9 a.m. Munroe Falls Metro Park / Tallmadge Meadows Area, 1088 North Ave., Tallmadge. New and experienced birders: Join us to identify birds by sight and sound, and learn other ID tips.

BANK SWALLOW WATCH -- June 17, 9 a.m., Cascade Valley Metro Park / Overlook Area, 354 Sackett Ave., Akron. Bank swallows are unique birds. They make their nests in steep, sandy river banks which is awesome to see! Join a naturalist on a short hike to observe a nesting colony of these social birds. Bring binoculars if you have them; some will be provided.

BUCKEYE MARTINFEST -- June 24, 2 p.m., Portage Lakes State Park, 809 State Mill Rd. Akron. Celebrate purple martins, the birds that are aerial acrobats and important insect-eaters.

All participants are welcome to feed scrambled eggs to the martins and help with data collection with the Portage Lakes Purple Martin Association. Enjoy crafts for children and adults.

BIRD SCAVENGER HUNT -- June 28, 2 p.m. Silver Creek Metro Park / Pheasant Run Area, 5000 Hametown Rd., Norton. Join a naturalist for a hike along Pheasant Run Trail while searching for various birds on a scavenger hunt.
