University of Akron

The Finance Department of the University of Akron's College of Business Administration presented Tallmadge resident James D. Musengo with the Professional Honor Society Award during an awards banquet in April 2012.

The award recognizes a professional for his or her service to the Department of Finance and/or the community.

Musengo attended John Carroll University on a U.S. ROTC scholarship, graduating and commissioned in cavalry as a second lieutenant in May 1982.

Stationed in Germany from 1982 to 1989, he was awarded positions of increasing responsibility, culminating when he commanded an M-1 Tank Co. with the 2D U.S. Calvary stationed along the east/west German borders. Capt. Musengo was then transferred to the University of Akron, Department of Military Science, where he worked survival assistance during Desert Storm I. He resigned his commission in 1993, under the Voluntary Separation Program, and then graduated from the University of Akron MBA program in December 1993, majoring in international business. For the last 16 years, Musengo has worked as a portfolio manager and certified financial planner with the Wall Street firm of Prudential Securities and for the last nine years with AIG VALIC. In 1999, the U.S. Army recalled Maj. Musengo to active duty for a nine-month hostile tour of duty in Boznia-Herzegovina. While in Bosnia, he was a liaison officer to a Muslim army headquarters stationed at Eagle Base in Tuzla. Musengo was awarded CFP certification in 2008.

He currently manages more than $85 million for AIG VALIC and works part-time as an assistant lecturer for the University of Akron Department of Finance. Musengo has performed community service as the treasurer for the Cleveland Heights High School Alumni Foundation since 2001. His military awards include one Meritorious Service Medal, five Army Commendation Medals, the NATO Service Ribbon, Joint Expeditionary Force Ribbon and myriad other military medals and recognitions. He graduated from the U.S. Command and General Staff College in 1996. Musengo resides in Tallmadge and has one daughter who lives in Dusseldorf, Germany.

University of Mount Union

Jenna Balazs, a junior public health major, and Sara Lemmon, a senior biology major, both Tallmadge High School graduates, were named to the dean's list at the University of Mount Union for fall 2012 semester.

To be named to the dean's list, a student must have completed at least 12 credit ours of traditionally graded coursework while achieving a grade-point average of 3.5550 or better.

Hunter College

Emily Alleshouse, a 2010 graduate of Tallmadge High School, has been named to the dean's list at Hunter College in New York City for the Fall 2012 semester. Emily is majoring in emerging media.

Taylor University

Alexandra Mellen of Tallmadge was named to the dean's list for fall semester at Taylor University.

To be named to the dean's list, a student must earn a grade-point average of 3.60 or higher for the term and take at least 12 hours of classes.

Walsh University

Emily Walker of Tallmadge graduated from Walsh University with a bachelor's degree Dec. 16.

University of Cincinnati

Maggie Connell was named to the dean's list at the University of Cincinnati for fall semester with a grade-point average of 3.46. A freshman in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, she is studying to become a chemical engineer.

The Theodore Roosevelt High School honors graduate is the daughter of Dan and Terry Connell of Tallmadge. Her brother, Tom, is a junior studying computer engineering at the university.
