River Groves Citrus Fundraiser

The Family, Career and Community Leaders of America chapter (FCCLA) at Tallmadge High School is holding a citrus fruit fundraiser through Oct. 25.

Florida Indian River Groves is the supplier for the fresh-picked navel oranges, grapefruits and tangelos. Fruit is picked and on the truck for delivery to Tallmadge in 24 hours. Delivery in Tallmadge will occur between Nov. 14 and 19 -- just in time for the holidays. Fruit is available in 10-pound cartons for $20$ and 20-pound cartons for $27. Those who think a carton might be too much could consider splitting a box with a friend. When stored properly, citrus fruit can last for several weeks.

A special option available this year is to purchase a carton for donation to Good Neighbors, Akron Canton Regional Foodbank or the Tallmadge Schools Dare to Share Program (provides food assistance on weekends for selected students). FCCLA members will handle the delivery of donations to selected organizations, and include the name of the donor, if desired.

Profits from the fundraiser will help FCCLA students pursue a variety of service-oriented projects this year such as expenses for the Christmas tree the group decorates and donates annually to Akron Children's Hospital Tree Festival, or the family meals the club donates, cooks and serves for the 50-plus parents of children who stay at the Ronald McDonald House to be near a child in the hospital.

FCCLA builds tomorrow's community and family leaders through service and leadership opportunities and would appreciate your support.

Orders will be accepted until Oct. 25 and may be made by contacting Kelley Smith, club adviser, at THS, 330-633-5505, ext. 1125 or smith.kelley@tallmadgeschools.org).

Spotlight on

Tallmadge High School class officers and class advisers (Joni Giles, Julie Headrick and Arene Staszak) are putting together a program for sophomores called "Spotlight on Success Series."

Once a month they plan to host a program where a successful graduate of Tallmadge City Schools comes to share their advice, give direction and discuss the journey from making decisions in high school, to deciding on college choices, and other tips to help students navigate their way toward success.

The advisers encourage alums to share their journey and give successful tips to members of the sophomore class. Their goal is to have one speaker for each month of the school year, September through May, equaling nine speakers in this inaugural year.

Students have an academic time period from 10:35 to 11:35 a.m., and this is when the advisers would like the Spotlight Series to take place during the day.

Those interested in sharing and giving back to Tallmadge students are asked to contact one of the following advisers/teachers: Joni Giles, 330-633-5505, ext. 1603, giles.joni@tallmadgeschools.org; Julie Headrick, 330-633-5505, ext. 1619, headrick.julie@tallmadgeschools.org; or Arene Staszak, 330-633-5505, ext. 1506, staszak.arene@tallmadgeschools.org.
