Ballet Theatre of
Ohio will perform "The Wizard of Oz" at the Akron Civic Theatre, offering three performances on May 3 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., and May 4 at 2 p.m.
Artistic Director Christine Meneer is the choreographer and costume designer for the full-length ballet. Local artist Jack Ballance designed the set which includes a brightly colored Munchkin Land, the ominous Witch's Castle and a dazzling Emerald City. Barbara Kelly and Deborah Wilhite head up the team of seamstresses who have created more than 140 elaborately detailed costumes.
Dancing the lead role of Dorothy will be Joanna Sullivan. Gary Lenington, Damien Highfield and Kelly Meneer dance the roles of Dorothy's dear friends, The Scarecrow, Tin Woodsman and The Cowardly Lion. The Good Witch of the North is performed by Kit Smart and her evil counterpart, The Wicked Witch of the West, is danced by Amy Ott.

Guests are encouraged to arrive early to visit the whimsical Oz boutique and join in on the lobby festivities which include children's interactive throughout the lobbies. The Mayor of Munchkin Land will present each child with a "Passport to Oz", inviting them to meet the "pint-sized" Oz characters as they skip down the yellow brick road, collecting cherished mementos along the way. Anyone dressed up as their favorite Wizard of Oz character or wearing red shoes will receive a raffle ticket for a family of four to win a Ballet Theatre of Ohio season subscription package worth $300.
