Hudson Players' 'Spamalot' a hilarious romp

by April Helms Special Products Editor Published:

While King Arthur's Knights may search far and wide for the Holy Grail, audiences to Hudson Players' "Spamalot" won't have to work nearly as hard for laughs.

The musical, which is based on the movie "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," with book and lyrics by Eric Idle (who also is the Voice of God via recording in this production) and music by John Du Prez and Idle, opened April 25 and is the final show in Hudson Players' 2013-14 season. "Spamalot" was directed by Dave Stebbins.

Those who have seen "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" will know the gist of the story, although there are a few twists and surprises in the musical, including the addition of The Lady in the Lake (played by Nina Takacs). In this spoof of Arthurian legends, King Arthur (played by Don Bernardo), along with his loyal servant Patsy (played by Brian Diehl) search for gallant knights. Knights include Sir Robin (Eric Oswald), Sir Lancelot (Jim Dove), Sir Galahad (Derrick Winger), and Sir Bevedere (Adam Alderson). Together, they search for the Holy Grail, and encounter dangers such as the Knights of Ni, the Black Knight, taunting French guards and ferocious bunny rabbits.

The cast does a commendable job with the fast-paced and wicked humor, and kudos to the set designers. The costumes, also, were impressive.
