Tallmadge -- Police are seeking help from the community to track down two men suspected in a burglary at Saxon Village Apartments Sept. 23 where one suspect was believed to be shot by a resident in self defense.
Lt. Ron Williams, Tallmadge police public information officer, said arrest warrants have been issued for Akronites Sharton R. O'Neal, 24, and Brandon T. Revere, 29, who have both been charged with second-degree felony burglary.
According to the investigation, Williams said it appears both men entered a resident's apartment after O'Neal allegedly kicked in the unit's door.
He said the resident hid in a closet with a small handgun and shot O'Neal three times in the torso when confronted. It's unclear whether the intruders were armed at the time.
The resident then fled the apartment, Williams added, running away through a nearby wooded area. When police arrived at the apartments, all parties had fled.
"It appears that the victim believed he was defending himself from attack," Williams said, adding that the Castle Doctrine protects a resident's right to defend themselves and their property from intruders.
The resident whose apartment was broken into has since relocated, Williams noted.
Williams said O'Neal was treated at an area hospital. He has since recovered and has been discharged. There were no arrests made at the hospital because the incident was under investigation at the time and no charges had been filed.
Both suspects are black males. Revere is 6 feet tall and about 175 lbs. O'Neal is 5 feet, 6 inches tall and about 185 lbs.
Anyone with information about the either of the duo's whereabouts is asked to contact Tallmadge Police Department's detective bureau at 330-633-423.
