Tallmadge -- The Summit and Portage County Republican Central Committee has chosen John Rensel to serve the remainder of former Tallmadge City Council At-Large Representative Jack Sarver's term.
During a dinner meeting in Tallmadge this evening, Committee members cast 14 votes in favor of Rensel and one in favor of Betty Barton. Rensel and Barton were the only candidates who applied to fill the vacancy on Council when Sarver resigned effective Aug. 1. His term was set to expire Dec. 31.
Barton was absent but a relative represented her during the meeting.
Rensel, who was a Ward 4 Council representative until Democrat Carol Kilway defeated him in 2011, is to be sworn into office for the at-large seat at a future date.
Rensel is also running for one of three at-large seats on Council in the Nov. 5 election. The other candidates for the seats are Republican James Nunzoff and Democrats James Donovan, Robert Maguire, Kim Ray and Jeffrey S. Rettberg.
Council members serve four-year terms.
