Tallmadge -- The Summit and Portage County Republican Central Committee has chosen former Councilor John Rensel to serve the remainder of former Tallmadge City Council At-Large Representative Jack Sarver's term.
During a dinner meeting in Tallmadge Aug. 14, Committee members cast 14 votes in favor of Rensel and one in favor of Betty Barton. Rensel and Barton were the only candidates who applied to fill the vacancy on Council when Sarver resigned effective Aug. 1. His term was set to expire Dec. 31.
Rensel, who was a Ward 4 Council representative for 16 years until Democrat Carol Kilway defeated him in 2011, is to be sworn into office for the at-large seat at a future date.
"I bring to the city and to the Republican Party a unique perspective in the local politics and procedures that go on in the city of Tallmadge," Rensel said during a brief presentation before Committee members voted. He pointed out that he's familiar with the city's budgeting process because of his experience on Council.
Barton is a registered nurse at Northcoast Behavioral Healthcare in Northfield and unsuccessfully ran for Summit County Council District 6 in 2004. She was absent but a relative represented her during the meeting.
Rensel, who works at Bridgestone Americas Inc.'s Akron Technical Center, is also running for one of three at-large seats on Council in the Nov. 5 election. The other candidates for the seats are Republican James Nunzoff and Democrats James Donovan, Robert Maguire, Kim Ray and Jeffrey S. Rettberg.
Council members serve four-year terms.
