Summit County Judge Alison McCarty sentenced John M. Muzic, 28, of Northfield Village, to 15 years in prison on Friday, Sept. 6, Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh announced in a news release.
McCarty also deemed Muzic a Tier III sex offender, which requires him to register his address and employment with the sheriff for the rest of his life, according to the release.
In late January, Muzic stopped by his neighbor's house while a teenage babysitter was there and brought the girl back to his house after she asked to see his dogs. Muzic dragged the girl to his bedroom and threatened to kill her, and then raped her, according to the release. Muzic's DNA was found on a bite mark on the girl as well as in her underwear.
A jury found Muzic guilty of rape, a felony of the first degree; kidnapping, a felony of the first degree; and gross sexual imposition, a felony of the fourth degree, on Aug. 28.
In a separate case, Muzic is charged with robbery and assault in connection with a July 4 incident involving a Cuyahoga Falls woman and a Tallmadge woman. According to an Akron Police report, Muzic on July 4 allegedly stole a tan purse worth about $50 from a 19-year-old Cuyahoga Falls woman in the parking lot of a bar on Weathervane Lane.
During the incident, Muzic allegedly confronted the woman, then punched and kicked her. A 19-year-old Tallmadge woman attempted to stop the attack, and Muzic allegedly hit her in the face before grabbing the purse and running away.
The Tallmadge woman ran after him and confronted him, the report said. Muzic then handed the woman his wallet and continued to flee the scene, according to the police report.
A 33-year-old Akron man restrained Muzic until police arrived. Muzic has pleaded not guilty to charges of robbery, a second-degree felony, and assault, a first-degree misdemeanor, in the case. A status call in the case is scheduled for Sept. 26, according to a spokesperson for Judge McCarty's courtroom.
