Leaf collection program to end by Christmas Eve

Tallmadge -- After a delay because of earlier-than-expected winter weather, the city of Tallmadge's leaf collection program is wrapping up.

As of Wednesday, crews with the service department are again shifting their attention from plowing snow to picking up leaves.

To expedite the program, Mayor Dave Kline says he has authorized the crews to work on Saturday to take advantage of the forecasted warmer weather.

"My goal is to get all the leaves that are currently on the ground picked up before Christmas [Eve]," he says, stressing to residents that crews will only go by homes one more time and are discouraged from putting more leaves out by the curb.

The leaf pickup program has further been delayed because the trucks the city uses to pick up leaves in the fall are the same it uses to plow snow in the winter. It takes a day to switch the leaf pickup equipment to snowplowing equipment and back again, city officials say.
