Tallmadge -- A Tallmadge man is awaiting trial in the Summit County Jail on charges of rape, sexual battery, extortion and other offenses related to child pornography.

According to court records, last May a state grand jury indicted Eric J. Hartman, 37, on two counts of rape, each a first-degree felony; one count of sexual battery, a third-degree felony; and one count of extortion, a third-degree felony. He pleaded not guilty when arraigned.

His attorney didn't return a call for comment by press time.

Hartman is accused of committing rape when he allegedly engaged in sexual conduct with a person in Summit County who was unable to resist or consent because of a mental or physical condition or because of advanced age. He is accused of committing rape again when he allegedly forced or threatened to force someone into sexual conduct. Both incidents were alleged to occur in January of 2012.

The charges of sexual battery and extortion arose from the same incidents.

During an arraignment last month, Hartman again pleaded not guilty to the additional charges of three counts of pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor, a second-degree felony, and three counts of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material or performance, a fifth-degree felony.

The additional charges stemmed from incidents that allegedly happened from August to November of 2012.

The court set a trial in November of 2012 for the first set of charges, which was vacated when Hartman was indicted on the second set. Another trial date has yet to be scheduled.

He is being held without bond.
