Aurora mayor touts proposed mixed-use district at Geauga Lake

One of the key issues on the horizon for Aurora residents is the proposed rezoning of the former Geauga Lake amusement park property, Mayor Ann Womer Benjamin said in her first State of the City address Feb. 13.

"After rezoning to a mixed-use development district, more development opportunities will open up for the city," said Womer Benjamin, speaking to about 110 people at the Bertram Inn.

Update: 911 calls reveal Cuyahoga Falls family hid in bedroom while armed man was in basement

The recordings of two 911 calls reveal a father, mother and daughter locked themselves in a third-floor bedroom of their 23rd Street home Sunday night while the daughter’s ex-boyfriend, armed with a 9 mm handgun and assault rifle, was hiding in their basement.

Cuyahoga Falls Police have identified the ex-boyfriend as 22-year-old Robert A. Mann of Rittman. Mann died at Akron City Hospital after he shot himself in the head, according to Falls Police Chief Jack Davis.

Pastor Randall speaks to Christ Community Chapel about experience in Philippines' jail

Christ Community Chapel Pastor Tom Randall, who is known as "Uncle Tom" to the orphaned children he takes care of and has helped raise in the Philippines, used a mix of humor and sentimental seriousness Feb. 9 to recount his experiences of being held in a Filipino jail for 22 days.

Randall was the key speaker in three morning services at Christ Community Chapel, 750 W. Streetsboro St. Randall, of Stow, was greeted with standing ovations and roaring applause at each.

Stow man pleads guilty, sentenced to 15 years for rape and kidnapping of neighbor

Fishcreek Road resident Filip Konstantinovich, 49, was sentenced to 15 years in prison Feb. 18 after he pleaded guilty to  the rape and kidnapping of a neighbor in September.

Summit County Common Pleas Judge Tammy O’Brien sentenced Konstantinovich and labeled him a Tier III Sex Offender, requiring him to register every 90 days for life.

Some neighbors oppose proposed Sammie's Bar and Grill parking lot expansion

A commercial property owner's request to expand the parking lot of a busy restaurant met opposition from some neighbors during a Tallmadge Planning and Zoning Commission meeting Feb. 6.

Robert Antrobius took his plans to add onto the rear portion of the existing parking lot on his property at 498 South Ave., where Sammie's Bar & Grill opened last October, before the Commission.

Goodwill Industries moving location in Northfield Village

Goodwill Industries is moving its Northfield Village store from its present location on Northfield Road next to Pepper’s Fresh Market to a location behind the Dolphin Family Restaurant in Summit Plaza, at 10333 Northfield Road.

“It’s just basically moving down the road,” said Jennifer Bako, spokesperson for Goodwill Industries of Akron, adding the larger retail floor should provide a better shopping experience.

AMATS study explores feasibility of trail connecting Brimfield, Suffield, Kent

The Akron Metropolitan Area Transportation Study is sponsoring a feasibility study to see whether a multipurpose trail can be built that would connect Suffield, Brimfield and Kent.

The study will contemplate connecting neighborhoods, schools, shopping areas and various parks, including Wingfoot Lake State Park, Mogadore Reservoir, Kent/Cooperrider Bog and the PORTAGE Hike and Bike Trail.

Twinsburg
Charges filed in Feb. 2 traffic death of Twinsburg resident Lester D. Mitchell

A 21-year-old Mayfield Heights man has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide following the Feb. 2 death of Trailwood Drive resident Lester D. Mitchell along Interstate 480, after Mitchell had arrived to change a tire on his wife's vehicle.

Andrew Picha was charged Feb. 5 with one count of aggravated vehicular homicide, one count of vehicular homicide and one count of vehicular manslaughter.
