UPDATE

Tallmadge -- Beginning this fall, Tallmadge High School head boys basketball coach and physical education teacher Mike Bluey will join the school's leadership team as assistant principal.

The Board of Education voted to hire him June 18. His two-year contract begins in August.

According to Superintendent Jeff Ferguson, Bluey's starting salary will be $75,404 annually.

While working as assistant principal, he will continue coaching the basketball team.

The 39-year-old Uniontown resident will work with Principal Michael Householder, whom the Board hired after former Principal Rebecca DeCapua retired at the end of the 2013-14 school year. Householder was assistant principal at the high school for 16 years. He earned an annual salary of $82,437 while working in the job.

Bluey, an Erie, Pa., native, has a bachelor's degree in health and physical education from Youngstown State University, a master's degree in the art of teaching from Marygrove College in Michigan and a master's degree in education administration from the University of Cincinnati.

Throughout his nine-year tenure with Tallmadge schools, he has taught subjects in every building throughout the district, including career-based intervention and health and physical education. Last year, he taught physical education at the middle school and high school.

While taking on various administrative tasks as part of internships and mentorships the past few years, he said he's gained skills and experience that prepared him to advance his career to the administrative level.

According to Ferguson, the school district interviewed six candidates for the assistant principal post.

"He's really done a great job of working with students and staff. We felt we had a number of outstanding internal candidates, as well as a couple outside, but we really felt that Mike had taken full advantage of those opportunities in preparing himself," he said.

Bluey's primary responsibilities as assistant principal will be discipline, attendance and helping students make choices that will help them succeed academically, Ferguson said.

Bluey said he was excited about the job as soon as he learned about it.

"Having an impact on the greater group -- all our students instead of just the students I have inside of a classroom -- that's always been intriguing to me," he said. "The challenge to work with all of our students across the board, the opportunity to work with all of our teachers inside of the building. Those opportunities interest me. I look forward to the challenges that are presented in the position."
