Kent man dies in car crash on East Avenue

Tallmadge -- A two-vehicle crash on East Avenue July 17 resulted in the death of one of the drivers and injuries to the other.

According to a police report, Robert Foster, 58, of Kent, was driving a 1997 Saturn sedan eastbound on East Avenue around 3:45 p.m. when a "medical emergency" caused him to drive left of center and strike head-on a 2000 Honda Accord that was traveling westbound.

Both vehicles overturned upon impact, and air bags deployed.

According to Police Lt. Ron Williams, Foster was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, but he was unable to say whether his injuries or medical condition led to his death.

"It's kind of the chicken or the egg. He had very serious injuries from the crash, and he had a serious health condition," Williams said. "I'm not a doctor, but from what I understand he would have had a hard time surviving either."

He declined further comment about Foster's medical condition and was unable to say what his specific injuries were.

The driver in the other car, Laura Lee Cundiff, 48, of Kent, suffered "multiple injuries" and was transported to Summa Akron City Hospital. Williams declined to comment about the type and severity of her injuries, and no additional information was obtained from the hospital.

As a standard procedure in a fatal accident, Williams said police tested Foster for alcohol and drugs.

"There was no reason to believe that he had done anything wrong. He wasn't committing a crime," Williams said. "Nobody felt that he was on drugs or alcohol or anything. Poor guy's going down the street, and it was his time."
