Tallmadge -- A Caruthers Road man was charged after he was accused of throwing a hatchet at another man and also damaging a TV during a fight at his home Aug. 17.

Matthew T. Scott, 28, faces one count each of second-degree felonious assault and first-degree misdemeanor criminal damaging. According to records from Stow Municipal Court, Scott is out of jail on a $50,000 bond. His next court date is scheduled for Aug. 26 in front of Judge Lisa L. Coates.

According to the police report, a witness to the fight called police around 1:45 a.m. When police arrived at Scott's home, he and the man he's accused of fighting with were separated, and the officer wrote it was "clear" Scott struck the victim.

Police Chief Donald Zesiger declined to disclose what led to the argument between Scott and the 22-year-old man who had been living with him temporarily, but said the thrown hatchet missed the victim.

The victim suffered abrasions to his face and a bite mark on his back, but he wasn't transported to the hospital, Zesiger said.

Police also are unsure about how the TV was damaged.

"We know that Scott was responsible for it, but as to how he actually did it, we don't know," Zesiger said.

The victim didn't pursue charges at the time, but he and witnesses came to the police station later that day to sign the charges.

Police arrested Scott the same day, and Scott pleaded not guilty to the criminal damaging charge the next day.
