Operation, thanked them for “their many years of distinguished service” in a statement to GateHouse employees on Thursday.
The eight daily markets also include the Daily Record in Wooster, the Alliance Review, Ashland Times-Gazette, the Daily Jeffersonian in Cambridge, the Canton Repository, Massillon Independent and the Dover/New Philadelphia Times-Reporter.
Before joining GateHouse, Shearer was executive editor of Gannett’s Media Network of Central Ohio, 10 daily newspapers and websites that include the Mansfield News-Journal, Newark Advocate and Zanesville Times-Recorder. While there, he worked to coordinate local enterprise stories using a statewide network of reporters — something readers can expect to see in the future.
“The whole goal is to maximize the power of local journalism by being smart about how we share content,” he said. “It’s about doing what’s best for the whole community.”
Shearer is a graduate of the journalism program at Ohio University and has worked in Ohio his entire career. He was city editor in Mansfield, then managing editor in Newark where The Advocate placed in five consecutive Ohio Associated Press “General Excellence” awards as one of the best newspapers in the state in its circulation class.
Shearer and his family are looking for a home in the Kent area.
