Tallmadge Safety School, sponsored by the Tallmadge Police and Fire departments, is a unit in safety education for all children living in Tallmadge who are eligible to attend kindergarten for the first time in August. Registration is limited to 40 students per session, and is offered on a first come, first served basis. Parents will be notified if the class is full.
Safety school will be conducted July 31 through Aug. 4 at the Tallmadge Recreation Center, 46 N. Munroe Road. Two sessions are being offered: a morning session from 9:30 to to 11 a.m. and an afternoon session from 1 to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Children will have a joint graduation ceremony Aug. 4 at 11 a.m. for both sessions. Graduation lasts about an hour.
Children will engage in daily safety lessons, color pictures and listen to speakers from the police and fire departments, and other agencies. A light snack will be provided, but it is suggested children eat breakfast or lunch prior to coming to school. Parents may also send a snack with their child.
Topics that may be covered in the classes include police officers are our friend, firefighters are our friends, school bus safety, gun safety, neighborhood safety, home safety, fire safety and bicycle safety. Children are encouraged to take a bike and helmet July 13. GASP (Guardians Advocating Child Safety and Protection) will be in attendance July 13 to fill out identification kits.
Registration forms are available at the Tallmadge Police Department, 53 Northeast Ave., and Fire Station 1, 85 W. Overdale Drive. The deadline to submit forms is noon July 21.
