HUDSON -- The Country Club of Hudson, 2155 Middleton Road, is known more for its sand traps and water holes than beach parties and surf-inspiring waves.

However, thanks to club member Dennis Wurdack, the grounds will take on a Surf City USA feel July 11 as one of the most iconic summer-time fun groups, The Beach Boys, takes the stage to sing some of their biggest hits in a 90-minute benefit concert.

The Beach Boys will perform beginning at 8 p.m. at a semi-private concert at the club to benefit the Akron-Canton Regional and Greater Cleveland food banks. About 1,000 tickets will be available for the public.

Wurdack, who has lived in Hudson for more than 30 years, grew up in southern California and a surfed the same beaches as a group of singing family members and friends -- The Beach Boys.

"I grew up with one of the originals as a friend and we got to know each other really, really well," Wurdack said. "I grew up surfing some of the same beaches they did and that type of music is in my blood, to say the least."

Wurdack's friend, Bruce Johnston, began with the The Beach Boys in 1963.

"As a longtime member of Hudson Country Club I thought it would be cool for the country club and help give back to some of the area food banks," Wurdock said of the concert. "Last November I got to talking to my buddy, The Beach Boy, and I said, 'I got this really crazy idea...'"

The idea will become reality July 11.

The concert, a first for Hudson, will be on the club's driving range.

"It's kind of a nice intimate setting," said Bob Hon, general manager of the county club. "It's a great event and a perfect summer venue. We are excited to be a part of it and we are looking forward to it."

Scott Brubaker is helping Wurdack market and promote the event.

"Talk about thinking big - Wurdack is bringing to Hudson The Beach Boys, the iconic eight-piece band including founders Mike Love and his friend, Bruce Johnston, for a concert at The Country Club of Hudson," Brubaker said. "A few weeks ago he [Wurdack] was the guest of original Beach Boy Bruce Johnston backstage at the Royal Albert Theatre in London after a nearly three-hour performance to 6,000 raving fans."

According to Brubaker, The Beach Boys are returning stateside prior to the Hudson concert after shows on three continents which include Australia, Ireland and Hong Kong.

"Kids who are 15 know The Beach Boys and people who are 70 know The Beach Boys," Brubaker said. "Dennis is a character and he thinks big."

According to Brubaker, Wurdack is excited about helping the area food banks through ticket sales.

"We have been told by the food banks that 1/3 of the hungry persons in our area are kids. What sticks in a customer's mind is not generally a letter, phone call or even a dinner meeting. What sticks is a memory," Wurdack said. "Seeing and meeting The Beach Boys will stick in the memory of everyone."

Wurdack, who is an executive search consultant, is known for hosting extravagant events, Brubaker said. Wurdlack recently leased the entire Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and had a party for 375 customers, friends and family members. A few years back Wurdack set it up so his customers could play golf with the winners of several major pro golf tournaments.

"I compete with international executive search companies for executives from four continents," according to Wurdack."The Beach Boys at the Country Club of Hudson on July 11 is pretty cool but our mission is to help the hungry of Northeast Ohio. Every ticket sold is important."
