Tallmadge City Council"s Proposed ResolutionApril 17, 2007
If you go to the City of Tallmadge website and click on "city council", this is what it reads: "City Council is the legislative branch of municipal government. The responsibilities of council are adopting laws, establishing policies, and authorizing the expenditure of the city"s finances. As elected officials, we not only appreciate any input from our constituency, but we anticipate it. Many of our decisions are based on information that we receive from the citizens of Tallmadge." This statement is clear that the council was voted in by the people of the city to focus on city issues, NOT National issues, military policies or political party agendas. City council authority does not go beyond local government. I respectfully ask that the council does not proceed further with this resolution. If you continue, it would be a huge misrepresentation and a lie as to the true feelings of all the citizens of this city. The city council should be proud of the accomplishments and decisions they have made for the betterment of this city but if the city council assumes that they have the same expertise, experience, background and knowledge as the Brigadier Generals of the military, the Secretary of Defense, the Commander in Chief, then I fear your pride has turned to arrogance and you think more highly of yourselves than you ought. City council should not use the tragic deaths of these young Tallmadge men for their own political agenda or advancement; these young men are heroes and should not be treated as victims. It is a horrific tragedy that these young men have sacrificed their lives in war, but to quit and not finish the mission would make their deaths and sacrifice of no purpose. My sons, Operation Specialist Nick Zeno (USCG Reservist) and Private First Class Mike Zeno (USMC), currently serve in the armed forces. They both willingly joined the military during the war. They, as well as every other military personnel who joined after 9/11, knew that they would be deployed to the Middle East. I am proud of their decision and would not disrespect them or any other man or woman who readily serves this country. My family does not want to be a part of a resolution that tells the men and women of the military that the decision they made to fight for freedom was wrong. As Americans, we need to support the troops and their mission. Their Patriotism is to be commended for they chose a path that is far more unselfish that most of us would ever consider. I reverently ask the citizens of Tallmadge to pray for the safety of the troops and to fly the American flag in support of those whom currently serve the United States of America. I also urge the citizens to attend the city council meeting on Monday, April 23rd to let their voice be heard. After all, they anticipate and appreciate our input. Mrs. Tami M.
