Boys track program storms past rival BarbertonMay 4, 2008
The host Tallmadge boys track and field team scored a commanding 103-31 victory over Suburban League rival Barberton April 29. The following Blue Devils won their events: Shot put: Michael Warren, 44 feet, 11 inches High jump: Cody Wood, 6-0 Long jump: James Plunket, 17-6 Pole vault: Aaron Warner, 13-0 3,200-meter relay: 9:13 110 hurdles: Kyle Webb, 18.3 1,600: Derek Harden, 4:47 400: Jesse Batko, 53.6 800: Nick Freeman-Clark, 2:19 300 hurdles: Kevin Kollar, 44.2 3,200: Kevin Murphy, 11:38 1,600 relay: 3:41.7 "Aaron Warner is our first pole vaulter to clear 13 feet since Brian DeMeio, who cleared 14 feet earlier in the decade," said Tallmadge head coach Mike Srodawa. "Mike Warren had personal-best throws in the shot put and discus." Tallmadge finished third with 86 points at the eight-team Reinhart Relays April 26 at Stow-Munroe Falls High School. Stow won the competition with 105 points and Nordonia placed second (99). The following Blue Devils placed in the top six in their events: 100: Tyler Fortner, second, 11.3 3,200: Travis LeVan, second, 10:27.1 110 hurdles: Plunket, third, 16.1 400 relay: Fortner, Jamie Wade, Kollar and Mike Reich, fourth, 45.6 800 relay: Fortner, Yianni Karvounides, Plunket and Shane Wiles, fourth, 1:36.1 1,600 relay: Batko, Karvounides, Kollar and Fortner, second, 3:36.8 3,200 relay: Matt Bauch, Rob Popa, Kyle Webb and Josiah Myatt, fifth, 8:59 6,400 relay: Freeman-Clark, LeVan, Harden and Brian Phillips, third, 19:36.2 800 distance medley: Chris West, Batko, LeVan and Harden, second, 11:42.8 Shuttle hurdles: Warner, Plunket, Kyle Tywon and Bobby Webb, third, 1:08.3 High jump: Warner, tied for fifth, 5-10 Pole vault: Warner, first, 12-0; and Pat Walch, tied for third, 10-6 Long jump: Warner, sixth, 18-7.25 Shot put: Warren, sixth, 42-2.75 The boys also lost an 85.333-51.666 decision to Suburban League rival Highland April 24 at home. The boys team won four events: 3,200-meter race: Harden, 1 minute, 3.9 seconds 110 hurdles: Plunket, 16.7 High jump: Wood, 5 feet, 10 inches 1,600 relay: Fortner, Karvounides, Kollar and Batko, 3:36.2 Srodawa was happy to see middle-distance runner Steve Haury return to the lineup. Haury had been out with a stress fracture. "Steve ran a 2:06 in the 800 qualifier," Srodawa said. "His fastest time last year was 2:13. He worked really hard in the off-season." Tallmadge was scheduled to visit league rival Wadsworth May 6 at 4 p.m. The Blue Devils are set to compete at the Toby Grim Relays May 8 in Dalton.
