Girls honored after soccer team's stellar campaignNovember 16, 2008
The Tallmadge girls soccer team had its banquet Nov. 11. Senior center midfielder Jamie Buehler and junior Fernanda Frajia each earned first-team All-Suburban honors and second-team all-district recognition. This is the first time the Lady Blue Devils had two players named to the all-league first team. Freshman forward Peyton Patrick and junior center midfielder Michelle Richard each made the second team. Honorable mention selections included junior sweeper Jenny DeMarco and sophomore defender Donna Cottrell. Buehler, Frajia, who was named the team's offensive player of the year, and Liz Lueptow each received captain's awards and DeMarco was named the team's defensive player of the year. The Tallmadge players also excelled in the classroom. For the sixth consecutive year, the Lady Blue Devils received the National Coaches Association of America & Adidas the Team Academic Award for a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher. The team also earned the Ohio High School Athletic Association Team Award for a grade point average of 3.67. This is the highest grade-point average in head coach Larry Buehler's tenure. Tallmadge had an 8-9 overall record, which was its best record ever. The Lady Blue Devils rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat Highland 3-2. They scored the go-ahead goal on a corner kick with 45 seconds left. Tallmadge also rallied from a 3-0 deficit to score a 4-3 victory over Revere. The Lady Blue Devils won two games in the Suburban League for the first time ever. A total of seven Tallmadge players found the nets at least once this season. The Lady Blue Devils lose two seniors to graduation and expect to have seven seniors back in the lineup next season. "There is a lot of potential for next season if they put the necessary time in the off-season to get stronger and better," Larry Buehler said. "I would also like to thank Scott Williams, my assistant coach for the last six years, for all the support, guidance and friendship we developed," he added. -- From staff reports E-mail: stowsports@recordpub.com Phone: 330-686-3914 Comments
