A group of Summit County officials still plan to visit India, including Mumbai, for an economic development mission despite terrorist attacks there earlier this week.
Representatives of the Summit County Mayors Association tentatively plan to leave Dec. 3, later than their original departure date of Nov. 30, and return Dec. 13, according to Hudson Mayor Bill Currin. He said plans could still change, but all officials involved with the trip were "on board."
"The situation in Mumbai is improving very rapidly and has been very isolated," Currin said Friday afternoon.
Currin, Stow Mayor Karen Fritchel, Twinsburg Economic Development Director Larry Finch and Hudson Economic Development Director Chuck Wiedie are among the county officials expected to go on the trip to at least four cities in India.
They will visit Mumbai on the tail end of their trip. Previously, the group had planned to visit Mumbai first, but terrorist attacks there that killed more than 150 people changed those plans.
On Thursday, the U.S. Department of State urged Americans to defer travel to Mumbai for at least 48 to 72 hours. It warned all U.S. citizens traveling to India "to maintain a high level of vigilance."
The officials call the trip a "Path Finding Trade Mission to India."
"We will be focusing on the automotive, plastics, alternative energy, automation, instrumentation, controls, and electronics industries," Currin stated. "The mission is to create a comprehensive, mutually beneficial business relationship with the business community of India."
