Tallmadge -- The North American Indian Cultural Center in Tallmadge will serve as a proverbial shepherd for the "lambs" of the People Serving People sewing group.
The group, which sews items for various people and organizations in need, has been meeting once a week, for the past 17 years, at the currently vacant United Evangelical Church in Tallmadge.
When the church reopens as Community at New Direction, 226 Southeast Ave., the "lambs," as members refer to themselves, need to find a new place to meet.
Enter the North American Indian Cultural Center located at 111 West Ave., which agreed to let the PSP group meet once a week at their building, which formerly housed the YWCA.
The center called Fisher and offered their place for the group to use.
"We then checked it out and it was a great deal for us," Fisher said.
PSP member Charlotte Fisher said the space at the cultural center is exactly what the group was looking for.
"It's ideal for us. It's right off the Circle, with a great big room and more importantly, lots of storage space," she said.
Fisher said the center isn't asking for any rent, but the group plans to sew items the center may need to help the groups that the cultural center helps.
PSP members hosted their last Christmas Tea of the season last week and will remain at the church for one last meeting before they move to their new location next week.
The move comes at a busy time for PSP because groups helping the needy are asking for a lot of donations now, said Fisher.
"We're frantically trying to finish 75 lap robes for the Stow Glen Nursing Home," she said. "We are also finishing 12 twin-size quilts for the veterans at the Freedom House in Ravenna. We're rushing around."
The group is always accepting donations of fabric, yarn and other sewing materials. To donate to the group or to join, call Fisher at 330-630-9210.
