Tallmadge -- The city was issued another clean audit by the state June 23.

Also, for the 16th consecutive year, the city was recognized in the audit report for "excellence in financial reporting" by the Government Finance Officers Association for 2008.

"We are proud to have a clean audit," said Finance Director Jill Stritch, adding Tallmadge has received clean state audits for more than a decade.

The report was made available at www.auditor.state.oh.us on June 23.

The audit showed "no findings," which means state auditors did not find anything to show that public funds were spent inappropriately and/or unlawfully.

Audits are conducted by randomly sampling expenditures, looking at city contracts, reviewing minutes from City Council meetings and reviewing the payroll process, she said, adding "they did a thorough job."

Stritch credits the clean audit to "working very closely with the departments we work with every day and trying to improve ourselves and our controls."

While Tallmadge's financial record has remained untouched for more than a decade, Stritch explained the theft of more than $100,000 dollars from the city by the former recreation facility manager in 2007 has made the city's internal procedures even more stringent "and as a result, we are a better run city because of it."

Because the city had an external audit performed in 2007 to track the city's finances better, it was reported and fixed and would not tarnish the state's separate audit in 2007 or thereafter.

"The state was very pleased and satisfied with the changes made and the city's actions," Stritch said. "Therefore, there is no longer any need to have that in any audit."
