Incumbent Lisa Zeno Carano may have opposition as she seeks to keep her post as clerk of courts for the Stow Municipal Court.
Democrat Carano of Tallmadge and Republican Kathleen Murphy Jeffers of Hudson filed their petitions with the Summit County Board of Elections by the June 25 deadline. If their petitions are approved, they will appear on the November ballot.
Carano has been clerk of courts since April 2007 when she was appointed to the post. She was elected to her current term as clerk of courts in November 2007.
She and her husband have four children.
"Seeing the improvements my staff has implemented and worked so hard on has been very rewarding to me. We'll continue to move this office forward in order to make this the best court in the state of Ohio," Carano said.
"I've been able to reduce our operational costs by approximately $70,000 and would like the opportunity to continue my work to streamline and improve the Clerk of Courts Office."
Jeffers is a probate and estate paralegal at Weston Hurd LLP in Cleveland and a member of the Cleveland Association of Paralegals. She has not previously held an elected office.
She is married to Hudson City Councilman John Jeffers. She has three children, four stepsons, and seven grandchildren and step-grandchildren.
She said she has the "educational requisites" for the job, including paralegal certification, and is familiar with the practices of courts in 10 different Ohio counties.
"I understand the business aspects of how a court administration works," Jeffers said.
The jurisdiction of the Stow Municipal Court District includes the following communities of Northeastern Summit County: Boston Heights, Boston Township, Cuyahoga Falls, Hudson, Macedonia, Munroe Falls, Northfield, Northfield Center Township, Peninsula, Reminderville, Sagamore Hills, Silver Lake, Stow, Tallmadge, Twinsburg and Twinsburg Township.
