Tallmadge -- Coming from generations of family members in the medical field, Dr. Jeff Bachtel celebrated 25 years of operating a family practice for generations of Tallmadge families July 2.

"We're celebrating 25 years, all of which have been in Tallmadge," he said of his practice, Bachtel and Associates Inc. June 23. "It's hard to believe it's been 25 years, it's gone by quickly."

Located at 182 East Ave., the practice was located in two other Tallmadge spots over the years -- directly across the street on East Avenue and in an office in Summa Healthcare on North Avenue.

While Bachtel is the person to see if you've got a sore throat, he does more in the community than offer medical services.

He has been the school district's team physician for 25 years, former Tallmadge Little League umpire, and active member, director and writer for the Dynamics Community Theater.

"I like to invest in the community," he said, adding he has lived in Tallmadge since he was 10.

Bachtel, a 1975 THS graduate, went to Kent University and was in the first graduating charter class of the NEO College of Medicine in 1981.

From there, he and his wife Anne, who is the office's information systems manager, started the business across the street from their current location in a small white home they fixed up for commercial use.

"We've always wanted to stay in Tallmadge, because of the people in this community," he said, adding his two children, 2004 THS graduate Robert and Marquette University sophomore Meghan, also grew up in Tallmadge.

Bachtel said there are three things that differentiate himself from other doctors: "I write neatly, I always work on Wednesdays and I'm a lousy golfer ... which is why I work on Wednesdays."

During the last 25 years, Bachtel said a lot has changed in his field and within the community, but he continues to offer care for patients while adapting to new medical ways, like keeping electronic medical records of patients for the past three years.

Bachtel is planning a picnic to celebrate with his employees and family members and is planning on celebrating another 25 year anniversary soon as well -- his silver wedding anniversary in January.

Bachtel said he plans to stay in his current location and continue to serve patients in Tallmadge, Akron, Cuyahoga Falls, Stow and other areas of Portage and Summit counties.

"I want to keep devoting my services and time to this community," he said.
