Hike for the Hearts set for Sept. 19 The fifth annual Alyssa's Hike for the Hearts is scheduled for Sept. 19 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Goodyear Metro Park, 2077 Newton St. in Akron. It is a 1.8 mile parcours hike. The hike is organized by Sarah and Steve Calaway, who lost their 8-year-old daughter, Alyssa Ann, to viral myocarditis on Sept. 12, 2002. Other than the flu-like symptoms Alyssa exhibited immediately preceding her death, there were no outward signs that would indicate anything was seriously wrong. Through Alyssa's Hike for the Hearts, the Calaways hope to raise awareness about the illness and money for research. Proceeds from the event are used for research of viral myocarditis at Cleveland Clinic's Children's Hospital and for camp scholarship funds to send needy grade school children to Camp Carl in Ravenna, a place Alyssa never got to visit herself, but wanted to. Over the past four years, more than $100,000 has been raised. Registration, hike day A large sign near the main building on Newton Street will welcome hikers. Upon arrival, participants are asked to sign in at the tables closest to the building, where hiker packets will be distributed. Those who turned in pledges of $50 before the Aug. 31 deadline will receive a T-shirt. Additional donations received after the deadline date may be turned in at this time. Raffle tickets will be exchanged for the extra money turned in (one ticket for every $10 donated). Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. The hike will begin at 10:45 a.m. Upon completion of the hike, participants are invited to stay for food and entertainment.
