Tallmadge -- After Dec. 1, the Regional Income Tax Agency will collect Tallmadge residents' income taxes after City Council approved the contract with the agency in September to save money.
Finance Director Jill Stritch said residents should have been notified of the switch from RITA in the mail recently.
After the beginning of December, all payments and forms will be mailed to RITA at P.O. Box 477900, Broadview Heights Ohio 44147.
Payments can also be obtained, completed and filed online at www.ritaohio.com.
"We encourage citizens and businesses to utilize the electronic filing and payment system, as it is secure and simple to use," said Stritch. "Tallmadge residents and businesses will receive 2009 tax forms from RITA in January 2010."
Stritch added that if any resident has not yet received a letter, they should call the finance department at 330-633-5599.
Previously, the city's finance department handled all income tax collections.
Stritch said the switch should save the city approximately $60,000. According to the contract with RITA, the city will pay the agency 2 percent of the amount of income taxes collected, which is between $140,000 and $180,000, Stritch estimates.
"During the beginning of 2010 when citizens are preparing their taxes there will be someone available at city hall to assist citizens at times to be announced at a later date," said Stritch. "There will still be staff in the Income Tax Division of City Hall to offer help to citizens and businesses."
Stritch added that RITA offers many advantages to the citizens that the city could not previously provide, like "including a more advanced level of technology and computerization, on line tax registration and on line payment of taxes for businesses and citizens."
"Through shared resources and regionalism we are able to enjoy economies of scale for the common good," she said. "We believe that RITA will provide a quality service for the city and in a cost efficient manner."
