Tallmadge -- "The definition in the dictionary for 'teacher' should be Sally Antonucci," said 2007-08 Teacher of the Year winner Kim Carlson. "She has guided students in lessons that will last a lifetime. No one is more devoted, caring, and concerned about her students."

Antonucci, a Tallmadge High School family and consumer economics teacher, was nominated by peers and students and selected as Teacher of the Year for 2008-9 on Nov. 11 by former award winners and Principal Rebecca DeCapua.

"Sally is respected by both staff and students. Her contributions to THS are endless," said DeCapua. "Mrs. Antonucci is always willing to dedicate her time to new initiatives which increase academics, interpersonal relationships and community service. She is a valued member of our Tallmadge High School family."

Antonucci said she is honored to be chosen for the award.

"There are many teachers doing outstanding work in and out of the classroom and it is wonderful that Tallmadge High School takes the time to recognize someone each year," she said. "It is through the support of colleagues, administration, parents, and the community that we are able to accomplish all that we do. I enjoy teaching the students of Tallmadge High School -- they bring me joy each day."

On her teacher of the year application, Antonucci wrote that her focus since 1976, when she began her teaching career in Tallmadge, is to teach students "to manage the challenges of living and working, now and in the future in a very diverse society. Problem-solving and critical thinking skills are emphasized throughout each of my classes."

Antonucci, a University of Akron and Marygrove College graduate, is involved outside the classroom as well. She is a grant writer team member for various programs at the school, a member of the Tallmadge Teachers Association, part of the curriculum committee, co-advisor for the senior mentorship program and volunteers for annual dances, food drives and helps endorse school levies, among other activities and pursuits.

THS National Honor Society President Ian Colledge echoes Carlson's thoughts, "Mrs. A is a great person who knows how to command the classroom with respect. She loves what she does and really understands her classroom topics of family relations, independent living, creative cooking and International foods."

The group that selects the teacher of the year looks at a teachers performance and involvement in four parts: education, background and experience; classroom contributions and achievements; publications, presentations and professional involvement and professional activities.
