Tallmadge -- Timothy Bryan, one of 18 contenders for an open seat on the Tallmadge Board of Education, was appointed to the Board during a special meeting Feb. 3.

"I don't have a specific agenda," said Bryan. "I want to help make a good thing better and do the very best we can for the students in the district."

Bryan, who said it is was an "honor to be picked," has been involved in a slew of community activities, served on various boards and clubs, and is currently the chief of staff at Hiram College with 22 years of experience in higher education.

He represents the president and Hiram Board of Trustees in budgeting, strategic planning, employee relations and operations activities, according to a press release issued by the district.

"The interviews went well," said Board President Valorie Prulhiere. "The addition of [newly elected Boardmember] Brad Croskey and Tim Bryan will bring new insights, ideas and energy to the Board. We're excited to have the selection process complete and get to work."

Bryan's involvement in Tallmadge includes volunteering for Tallmadge Youth Football, recreation basketball organizations, "as well as in the effort to pass the Tallmadge school levy," the press release stated.

"Based on my experience in education, I felt I had the skill set to make a contribution," said Bryan. "My goal is to listen and spend time coming up to speed on issues."

Bryan moved to Tallmadge four and a half years ago with his wife Jackie, who is a fifth-grade teacher in Barberton. They have one son, Alex, who is a freshman at Tallmadge High School.

"We moved to Tallmadge for the quality school system," he said.

Bryan will serve as a Boardmember for the next two years. He replaced a position that was vacated by former Boardmember Amy Goodson-Beal because she moved outside of the district. The term will expire Dec. 31, 2011.

Originally, former Board President Thom Craig was appointed to fill the vacant seat, but later resigned so the Board could "conduct a wide and deliberate search," he said.

The Board had closed interviews with all 18 applicants two weeks ago and Bryan was selected over them all. Boardmember Dennis Loughry said there were originally 20 interested residents, but two did not have interviews.

Even though the other 17 interested candidates were not chosen, Prulhiere said, "every applicant offered their ongoing support to the schools.

"We asked them all for their honest input and then listened, really listened to what they had to say," said Prulhiere of the interviews.

"Many of the applicants said communication with the community was an area we needed improvement, she said, "that will be priority for us."

The next Board of Education meeting is scheduled for Feb. 17 at 6 p.m. at the high school.
