THS students honored for work in BPA

Students from Joni Giles Software Tech I and II classes were honored Feb. 9 at the Tangier Restaurant for their work in Business Professionals of America, a regional, state, and national organization business students belong to at the high school and college level.

Tallmadge students competed with students from Summit, Medina and Portage Counties. Approximately 500 students competed and attended the awards ceremony.

Business Professionals of America Contestant Award Winners:

Nina Difalco: Fifth place -- Spreadsheet Applications and Keyboard Production

Madeline Ingersoll: Ninth place -- Spreadsheet Applications

Nicole Massaro: Third place -- Advanced Spreadsheet Applications; fourth place -- Management/Marketing/Human Resources Concepts

Jason Storey: Sixth place -- Banking and Finance

Sheila Long: Second place -- Desktop Publishing

Payton McVey: Sixth place -- Word Processing Skills Test

Lillie Kisner: First place -- Administrative Support Concepts; third place -- Medical Office Procedures; eighth place -- Word Processing Skills Test (Lillie placed in every test she competed in.)

Kelly Miller: Seventh place -- Basic Office Systems Procedures

Gabrielle Lambacher: Third-place -- Legal Office Procedures

Nathan Strobl: Third place -- Management/Marketing/Human Resources Concepts

Sheila Long is eligible to move on to the BPA State Competition in Columbus.

Scott Karnuth, Macie Ott, Audrey Hooverman, Amanda Griffin, Samantha Anzaldi and Stephanie Hunsicker placed in the top 20 in each of the categories in which they competed.

Students in Kim Brendel's Business class were also honored.

Twelve of her current students participated in the events and 10, or 83 percent, were publically recognized on stage for their outstanding effort. Eleven of the 12 students participated in judged competitions which mandate extensive research in business and economics to prepare detailed and original business plans, documents and presentations delivered to audiences of industry professionals from Northeastern Ohio.

Sara Thomas -- First place and advancing to state competition for Human Resources Management Presentation. Sara became an expert in benefits, compensation, workers' compensation and other legalities and policies associated with personnel management.

Derek Miller -- advancing to state competition for Fundamental Spreadsheet (MS EXCEL)

Alyssa Rainbolt -- Second place for Entrepreneurship. Alyssa created an Equine Therapy business.

Telly Galatoulas -- Third place for Entrepreneurship. Telly created an American-Greek fusion food restaurant.

Donita Echoles -- Fifth place for Entrepreneurship for Enhanced Designs -- a hair salon created to cater to customers of all ethnicities and races.

Emily Bunch, Kenny Barker and Nicole Amato -- Third place for Small Business Management. This team acted as business management consultants to an entrepreneur desiring to sell pie in the Seattle area.

Additional finalists in their respective competitions included Sean Fox and Brendan Hujar in Prepared Speech. Both students detailed their independent ideas to starting new businesses in Tallmadge.
