In a response to a request for international assistance from the Chilean Red Cross, the American Red Cross is accepting financial donations specifically for relief and recovery efforts in Chile following the 8.8 magnitude earthquake Feb. 27. The Red Cross is accepting Chile-designated donation through its Web site at www.redcross.org, through calls to 1-800-REDCROSS, and by texting "CHILE" to 90999 to make a $10 donation (which appears as a $10 fee on a phone bill). "The Red Cross waited to accept Chile-designated donations until local responders assessed the situation and there was a specific request for international assistance for the earthquake victims from either the Chilean government or the Chilean Red Cross," said Mike Taylor, Director of Marketing and Communications for the American Red Cross of Summit and Portage Counties. On March 2, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) launched a preliminary emergency appeal of $6.4 million to all Red Cross and Red Crescent societies to assist the Chilean Red Cross. The American Red Cross is accepting donations in response to this appeal. Following the earthquake, the American Red Cross pledged an initial $50,000 for relief operations which was quickly increased to $250,000. The Red Cross is prepared to offer additional support -- in the form of financial assistance, trained personnel and relief supplies -- should the Chilean Red Cross make further requests for aid and assistance. The ICRC has also launched a Family Links Web site aimed at enabling people in Chile and abroad to register the names of relatives with whom they wish to restore contact. People seeking news from their loved ones can register the name of the missing individual directly on the site at http://www.icrc.org/familylinks. Even in the event that the Chilean Red Cross makes a request for a mobilization of personnel, the American Red Cross would only select those members with international experience and training. As a result, Taylor does not expect anyone from the local Chapter to be called up for service in Chile. Comments
