Bussing Falls Short for Private School Kids

August 16, 2007

For ten years I have gone through the same thing. I call the bus garage to let them know my children will be riding the bus to and from St. Matthew and I get the same response. In order to ride the bus in the morning my children would have to be at the corner at 7:00 am. Then they drive around Tallmadge ,sit at the High school, then switch busses to get to school at about 8:15.(school begins at 8:30) Yes, over an hour to get to a school 8 minutes from my home. My only option is to drive them every morning. They have a much better route home as they get out at 2:45 and get on a bus, switch at Monroe, and arrive home at about 3:25. This year my daughter starts at Hoban. Ten minutes from my house. After school (she gets out at 2:50), she is to get on a Tallmadge bus, ride to St. V and the Elms( in West Akron !), back to the Bus Garage at 3:45, switch buses to get to her Tallmadge Hills home at about 4:00 or later.
We have been Tallmadge residents for 12 years. We pay our taxes like everyone else yet we choose to send our children to private schools and are penalized for it. I figure I am saving the school system alot of money by not sending my children there. We deserve school transportation to be provided in a safe and timely manner for our kids, just as much as the Tallmadge school kids. I'll remember how we are treated when the next levy comes up.
