Trumbull County -- Congressman Tim Ryan will run unopposed in the Democratic March 4 primaries for his fourth term in the District 17 seat. Political newcomer Duane Grassell also has filed to run unopposed for the Republican nomination.

Ryan, a Niles resident, was elected for his first two-year term to the District 17 seat in 2002.

The filing deadline for candidates was Dec. 26, 2007 with the write-in deadline passing on Jan. 2 with no candidates filling.

Trumbull County Board of Elections President Kelly Pallante said Grassell, a Mogadore resident, had withdrawn his candidacy for the Republican nomination Dec. 28 before refiling earlier this year, because of a problem with his signature on petitions. Pallante said because the petitions had yet to be formally reviewed, he was allowed to refile his candidacy.

Neither Ryan nor Grassell returned calls to Record Publishing Co.

Grassell had previously lost a bid for the Mogadore Board of Education in 2003, according to the Summit Board of Elections.

Without other candidates for the District 17 seats, Pallante said both candidates will appear on the Nov. 4 general election ballot, if both are certified.
