Students participate in Global Issues
Seminar at KSU

Tallmadge Middle School seventh- and eighth-graders were among students from Northeast Ohio schools who participated in the 2008 Global Issues Seminar at Kent State University March 12.

Each participating school sends one or two teams to the seminar who represent an assigned country in the UN General Assembly.

The following Tallmadge Middle School students were selected to attend: Seventh-grade team: Jacob Wood, Alex Bryan, Mandy Lamtman, Kelsey Knutty and Joe Testa.

The following students represented Belarus in the General Assembly: Eighth-grade Team: Jim Ritz, Skye Jarvis, Danny Nicolino, Shawn Mercer and Paige Schertzinger.

These students represented Iraq in the General Assembly.

Helping the students to prepare for the event were teachers Lindsay Bolender and Amy Bauknecht. Kent State University students and staff served as group facilitators. The middle school students determined from their assigned nation's point of view how the world's resources should be spent in stopping terrorism, educating the world's children, fighting poverty, controlling HIV/AIDS and protecting the environment and basic human rights around the globe.

This model UN program is also conducted annually at Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J. and beginning next winter in Las Vegas, as well.

The program is co-sponsored by the College of Education, Health, and Human Services at Kent State University and American Educational Consultants.
