Tallmadge -- Residents longing for the return of fresh, local produce, breads and cookies can soon expect the return of the city's farmer's market June 19.

The market debuted last year with 17 different vendors, according to Councilmember Linda Poinar, who pursued the idea of opening a market in Tallmadge.

The market will be open from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursdays from June 19 through mid to late October, depending on the weather, she said.

Vendors bring their own tents and set up at the Tallmadge Recreation Center, 46 N. Munroe Road, about an hour before the market opens, Poinar said.

"We have sent letters out to our vendors from last year to ask them to register for this year's market," she said.

There is no fee to operate a stand, and the city plans to put a banner outside to attract people driving by.

"This is not a money raiser, just a service for the residents," Poinar said. "The rec center proved to be a great location -- plenty of parking, easy access and good visibility."

Farmers operate many of the stands, but Tallmadge residents are welcome to man a stand as well.

"We are always welcoming new vendors and just ask that they register by contacting City Hall," she said.

Some of the products available this year include fresh cut flowers, baked goods, live plants, breads, organic produce and various craft items.

"I shop there every week -- it's a nice way to socialize as well," Poinar added.
