Tallmadge -- Racquetball courts and new cardio equipment await those ready to work out at the rec center now that the $500,000 in improvements to the upper level of the recreation center are done.
The facility had its re-grand opening Nov. 17. to show the two rows of new cardiovascular equipment (treadmills and ellipticals) and the racquetball courts, are ready for use.
Also, stadium-style bleachers now overhang the indoor soccer field and basketball courts and new flat screen televisions are situated in front of each cardiovascular machine.
Rec center gold members may use the racquetball courts for free, while blue members will be charged $5 for an hour of reserved court time, according to Rec Facility Manager David Cooper.
Cooper said those who use the courts will need to supply their own equipment, and reservations must be made two days in advance at the front desk or by calling 330-634-2349.
Cooper said the facility is working on youth and adult racquetball classes and racquetball and Wallyball leagues.
The project, which cost the city about $530,000, began a few months ago, according to the city's Public Service Director Dave Kline.
During the re-grand opening, the city hosted a luncheon for advertisers and those who have donated to the facility over the years.
City officials and Councilmembers were also in attendance.
"It's more functional now," said Councilmember John Rensel.
Council Vice President Jerry Feeman agreed, adding, "We've taken a lot of misused space and turned it into something better. We really took it to another level."
As a new year approaches, Cooper said he is seeking more donors and advertisers.
"Our hope is to partner with all Tallmadge businesses," he said. "Tallmadge is progressive because of its support for the Rec Center. Those in the city get how important it is in the mix of things and how the Rec Center benefits the community."
According to Cooper, 177,575 members have visited the facility since Jan. 1, 2008.
Anyone interested in advertising at the Tallmadge Rec Center should call Mayor Christopher Grimm at 330-633-5639 or Cooper's office at 330-634-2349.
